How to use the random state generator
- The 50 states start on the wheel. Tick Washington, D.C. or Territories to add them.
- Untick regions to spin only the Northeast, Midwest, South or West.
- Press SPIN. The result shows the abbreviation, capital, nickname and year the state joined the Union.
Pick a random state by region
The regions follow the US Census Bureau: the Northeast has 9 states, the Midwest 12, the South 16 and the West 13. Washington, D.C. counts as part of the South when it is included.

Is the generator fair?
Yes. Every pick uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and every entry on the wheel has the same chance unless you give it a weight. You can test the picker yourself on the live fairness test.
