The random letter generator is a 26-slice letter wheel that picks 1 letter from A to Z. Each letter holds a 1 in 26 chance (3.85%). The letter generator runs in your browser for word games, phonics lessons and drawing prompts.
How do you use the random letter generator?
To use the random letter generator, pick a letter set and press SPIN. The wheel lands on 1 letter in about 5 seconds. "Remove the winner" stops the same letter from coming up twice.
- Choose a letter set. Load AβZ, lowercase aβz, vowels, consonants or the alphabet without Q, X and Z.
- Press SPIN. Click the button, press Space, or flick the wheel.
- Use the letter. The result window shows "Your letter is" with the letter in large type.
- Set the next round. Keep the letter on the wheel, or remove it to work through the alphabet.
Which letter sets does the letter generator include?
The letter generator includes 5 quick-fill sets: AβZ, aβz, Vowels, Consonants and No Q X Z. Each set loads in 1 click. Custom sets accept any character, 1 per line.
- AβZAll 26 capital letters at a 3.85% chance each.
- aβzAll 26 lowercase letters, for handwriting and early reading practice.
- VowelsA, E, I, O and U at a 20% chance each.
- ConsonantsThe 21 consonants at a 4.76% chance each.
- No Q X Z23 letters without 3 hard starting letters, for faster word games.
- Other alphabetsΓ, Γ, Γ, Γ or Greek letters such as Ξ©, typed 1 per line.
How do you get random letters without repeats?
Random letters come without repeats when "After each spin" is set to "Remove the winner". Each used letter leaves the wheel. 25 spins then cover the alphabet, and the 26th letter is the one left.
"Hide the winner" takes letters off the wheel but keeps them in the list. "Restore hidden entries" returns all 26 letters for the next game. The Winners menu draws up to 26 different letters in 1 spin. 8 letters make a good word-building round.
Weights make the letter wheel closer to real English text. E makes up 12.7% of letters in typical English writing. E *3 makes E 3 times as likely as any other letter on the wheel.
What games use a random letter?
Random letters drive 5 classic game types: category games, word building, alphabet challenges, drawing prompts and phonics drills. Each game needs 1 spin per round.
- Category games: spin a letter, then name a fruit, a city and an animal that start with it. Scattergories rolls a 20-sided letter die for the same purpose.
- Word building: draw 8 letters at once and make the longest word.
- Alphabet challenges: name a song, movie or brand that starts with the letter within 30 seconds.
- Drawing prompts: sketch an object that begins with the letter within 60 seconds.
- Phonics drills: say the letter sound, then 3 words that start with it.
Teachers project the letter wheel with βΆ Present mode for whole-class rounds. The Vowels and Consonants sets focus a lesson on 1 letter group.
Is the random letter generator fair?
Yes. The random letter generator gives every letter the same chance unless a weight is added. Winners come from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographic random number generator.
A repeated letter is normal on a fair wheel. Each spin is independent, so the same letter comes up twice in a row 1 time in 26. "Remove the winner" blocks repeats. The wheel fairness test shows the even spread over 100,000 spins.
Which tools pair with the letter wheel?
3 tools pair with the letter wheel. The random number generator sets a time limit or a score. The random animal generator and the random country generator supply category prompts. Any custom list spins on the main spin the wheel page.
