How does balancing by skill work?
Balancing by skill sorts players from strongest to weakest. Each player joins the team with the lowest skill total. This snake-style greedy method keeps team skill totals close together. The summary line shows the lowest and highest totals.
"Balance teams by skill" is ticked by default and applies once at least 1 name carries a skill. Captains go first, 1 per team, before any other player. Players linked by a "with" rule move as 1 unit. A "not" rule blocks 2 players from the same team.
The generator makes up to 300 attempts to meet every rule. Impossible keep-apart rules are dropped, and a message explains the change. No team exceeds the people count divided by the number of teams, rounded up. 10 people in 3 teams make teams of 4, 3 and 3 without balancing or rules.
What can you use a random group generator for?
A random group generator fits any activity that splits people into fair sides. The 5 common uses are class groups, sports, workshops, game nights and golf scrambles.
- Class groups: paste a roster, mark 4 group leaders with
(c)and keep 2 chatty friends apart. - Sports and PE: rate players from 1 to 10 for even pickup basketball or soccer sides.
- Workshops: mix departments with "not" rules so colleagues meet new people.
- Game nights and trivia: make quiz teams and name them after colors or animals.
- Golf scrambles: convert handicaps to a 1 to 10 scale and build balanced foursomes.
Teachers keep the same roster between lessons, because names, rules and team names stay saved in the browser.
Are the random teams fair?
Yes. The random team generator shuffles names with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographic random number generator. Players with equal standing land in random teams, and ties break at random.
Skill balance changes who plays together, not the randomness. Players with equal skill swap between teams from 1 run to the next. Captains spread across teams at random. Names stay in your browser and are never uploaded.
Which tools pick 1 person instead of a team?
2 tools pick 1 person instead of a team. The random name picker spins 1 name or up to 50 at once. The main spin the wheel page handles any list, such as a turn order or a captain vote. Sports fans spin a random club on the NFL team wheel.
